City
of the month - New York City |
|
New
York City has a long history dating back hundreds of years.
Its rise to national prominence, however, occurred only during
the course of the 19th century, when urban development was
on the rise and cities became increasingly important in nations’
political and economical landscapes. By the end of the 19th
century, NYC was one of the most dominant cities in the US,
and has remained so to this very day.
Accommodation in NYC
New York City has always had a reputation of being an extremely expensive location for outsiders. However, it should be noted that much like any city, New York has its expensive hotels and restaurants, but also its cheap and affordable hotels and restaurants. It’s a simple matter of knowing where to look – the experience of visiting the city will be the same. Remember, you don’t have to stay in a hotel in Times Square or Central Park! There are many inexpensive hotels throughout the city, and with the help of public transportation, the location of the actual hotel becomes far less important than it normally would be.
You can check hotel availability and rates here.
Getting Around in NYC
Transportation in the city has always been a matter of great concern among New Yorkers. The sheer size of New York, and its particular layout, has caused many problems over the years with getting around from place to place. Traffic jams and the difficulty of finding a parking spot have caused many New Yorkers give up the idea of a personal car and rely on public transportation instead.
In that respect, NYC allows for much variation. Over 12,000 taxis are available throughout the city; the public subway system, launched in the early years of the 20th century, is one of the earliest and most famous ones in the world. Its vast network of tunnels reaches the farthest points of the city and allows countless commuters to travel between home and work each day. Additionally, boats are available between the various islands of New York City, and regular train lines can take you from the city to the outskirts, as well as the rest of New York State.

| Things to do in NYC
Whether you’re visiting for a day, a week or even a month, New York City promises to provide many things to do and places to see. From the countless museums, galleries, theatres and cinemas, to famous locations such as Central Park, Times Square, the Statue of Liberty, Broadway, etc. – there is barely a moment for boredom.
If you plan on visiting New York City, be sure to investigate a little about any particular events – such as concerts, conventions or performances – taking place during your visit. An excellent site to check for this is NewYork.com.
New York City Culture
New York is famous for many things, and one of them is the city’s cultural significance and dominance. Over the years, the city has played a major role in defining cultural movements in the modern world, with a great number of important artists and cultural figures emerging to prominence from within the city’s limits.
For those seeking a little bit of culture, two excellent museums are highly recommended: The Guggenheim Museum, and the Museum of Modern Arts. Of course, many other smaller museums will also present themselves as you wander the streets of New York, as well as cafes, clubs, bars and galleries where you can find refuge from the busy streets of the metropolis to indulge in a little culture.

Central Park
One of the most famous locations in New York City is no doubt Central Park. Located in the heart of Manhattan, between 59th Street and 110th Street, the park provides local New Yorkers with a welcomed relief from the busy streets and lifestyle of the big city.
Central Park boasts beautiful landscapes: large trees overshadow pathways that twist and turn with every step; a castle stands upon a hill, overlooking a small pond; boats peacefully float on picturesque lakes; and much more. The park also features many playgrounds and theatres, as well as a zoo! For those wishing to flex their muscles a bit, basketball, tennis, volleyball and skating courts are available, as well as many other solutions, such as wall-climbing programs. Alternatively, you can simply jog through the park, as many New Yorkers do every day. For more information about Central Park, visit the official Central Park Conservancy website. |
