From the State Department Rule for the DV 2009 Program:
"Alien petitioners for the Diversity Visa Program will no longer be permitted to submit a petition by mail. Instead, the Department will require that all petitions be submitted to it in an electronic format, using an Internet website dedicated specifically to the submission and receipt of Diversity Visa."

President Bush:
"America is not a fortress. No, we never want to be a fortress. We're a free country; we're an open society. And we must always protect the rights of our law -- of law-abiding citizens from around the world who come here to conduct business or to study or to spend time with their family."

City of the Month – San Francisco
San Francisco is a young city, only about 150 years old, but its history has already been marked by major events. Discovered by Spanish explorers during the 16th century, San Francisco started growing when the famous “California Gold Rush” started in 1848. The city was the center point of the Hippy movement during the 1960s, has become a popular residency for gay persons and today is known for being one of the most culturally diverse and liberal cities in the world.

Accommodation in San Francisco
San Francisco offers a wide range of accommodation options, from 1st class hotels to Bed & Breakfast inns, youth hostels and even RV and camping grounds. The city is divided into districts, offering a wide range of different accommodation experiences – from the yuppie and active lifestyle of Castro and Noe Valley, to “Motel Row” on Lombard St., where you can find the quieter, outdoor side of town.

You can check hotel availability and rates here.

Getting Around in San Francisco
San Francisco offers many easy transportation solutions; for this reason it is not necessary and even advised against using a rented car. Parking is expensive and hard to find in the city, and you will probably find it easier to depend on public transit. Walking is always a very good option, even though the hills San Francisco is built on can be challenging – it is a very fun and beautiful city to walk in. The three great public transport systems, the “Muni”, BART and the cable cars can solve every transportation problem you may encounter, and if they are not sufficient, bicycles are also a very popular San-Franciscan mode of travel.

Visiting San Francisco
Things to do in San Francisco
The City By The Bay offers many different sightseeing locations and landmarks for you to explore while visiting. From places that will interest the adults, such as Alcatraz Penitentiary Island, to excitement for children and the young at heart such as Universal Studios, the city has something to offer to every person of every age. The older generations might prefer World War 2 relics and museums that show the history of the city, while the younger generation might prefer to walk around the Haight-Ashbury area and soak in the atmosphere. Even while traveling with kids you can still enjoy some culture by visiting the Exploratorium, a fun place to experiment and play with science, or by sightseeing using in-line skates on a Sunday, when Golden Gate Park becomes a regular skating course enjoyed by many.

Golden Gate Bridge
Probably one of the most famous bridges in the world, the Golden Gate Bridge itself is not golden at all, but actually a reddish-orange color that’s used to warn low-flying planes. The huge park that surrounds the bridge, The Golden Gate National Recreation Area, is one of the largest urban national parks in the world. Established in 1972 and encompassing 59 miles of bay and ocean shoreline, these lands represent one of the nation’s largest coastal preserves and attract 16 million visitors each year. The park contains many historical and cultural resources, many different plant and animal species and even archeological sites.

Alcatraz Penitentiary
Alcatraz Island is one of Golden Gate National Recreation Area's most popular destinations, offering a close-up look at a historic and infamous federal prison. Visitors to the island can explore the remnants of the prison and learn about the Indian occupation of 1969-1971, early military fortifications and the West Coast's first (and oldest operating) lighthouse. These structures and the island's many natural features - gardens, tide pools, bird colonies and wonderful views of the bay – make it a very pleasurable experience, despite the site’s difficult history.
