4th of July - Independence Day |
| Independence Day is not only regarded as the birthday of the United States as a free and independent nation, but also the symbol of celebrating the freedom that is being an American citizen.
The holiday signifies the signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 4 th, 1776 . At that time, 13 British colonies started a war with the British king and parliament over what they thought was unjust treatment. As the war progressed, they realized they were actually fighting for freedom of self-government.
No Taxation without Representation
By the mid 1700s, the 13 colonies decided that it is too difficult to be ruled by a king from across the Atlantic Ocean, especially when that king imposed taxes on them, without giving them proper representation in the British parliament.
When the Revolutionary War began, the colonists voted on setting up a committee to represent them. The first Continental Congress met in September 1774 and started making a list of complaints against the British Kingdom. This list became the first draft of the document that would formally separate the colonies from England.
The final draft of the Declaration of Independence spelled treason against the crown and the persons who signed it were in danger of being executed.
On July 4th, the Continental Congress adopted this final draft and for the entire month the document was read publicly and people celebrated whenever they heard it.
The next year, bells rang, ships fired, and firecrackers were lighted on the 4th. The war itself continued until 1783, when Independence Day was declared an official holiday.

| 4th of July - Independence Day |
| Freedom of Religion
Thomas Jefferson, the third president of the United States, published in 1779 “A Bill for Establishing Religious Freedom”, which declared that no person will be compelled in any way to follow a religion that he did not choose, or be persecuted in any way for his religious beliefs.
This early bill has evolved over the years to where the United States has a complete separation between God and State, complete freedom to follow your own beliefs and a unique situation that exists only in the United States – where people are even allowed to start their own religions.
Abolishment of Slavery
The Declaration of Independence had a profound effect on anti-slavery emancipation acts, to a degree that those of New York and New Jersey were put into action on July 4th, 1799 and 1804.
Abraham Lincoln, the father of Anti-Slavery in the United States, found the declaration inspiring and realized his own view of its text – a realization that would soon become the entire nation’s understanding of the text: that all men are created equal and deserve the same rights.
The philosophy Lincoln saw in the Declaration became the basic philosophy behind his most famous of acts, the issuing of the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1st, 1863, where he wrote: “all persons held as slaves … shall be free”.
Live Music, Picnics and Fireworks
John Adams, the second president of the United States, predicted the later Independence Day celebrations when he wrote to his wife: “I believe that it will be celebrated … by pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires and illuminations from one end of this continent to the other...".
Nowadays, Americans have a holiday from work on July 4th. Communities hold day-long picnics with All-American food and live music, friendly sports games, and eating contests, and fireworks displays are enjoyed by all. |
