American
Investments in International Athletes |
| The
most successful athletes ever to emerge from the University
of Arizona were, surprisingly, not even American. Of the
four-person South-African swimming team at the 2004 Athens
Olympic Games, three were former University of Arizona athlete
students. They were recruited to the university as teenagers
- part of the continuing search of American educational
institutions for foreign athletes to train and nurture.
Ryk
Neethling, the leader of the South African swimming team,
is perhaps the most famous example of a foreign athlete
who came to the United States to strengthen the American
university teams, boost the level of competition and bring
American athletes closer to other cultures. Now, with nearly
$1 billion in government funds to spend in scholarship money
and a growing pressure for winning teams, U.S universities
and colleges are increasingly filling their lists with foreign
athletes.
Consequently,
the winners list of the 2004 summer Olympics is practically
over-run by immigrants who decided they are competing for
their new country. Examples range from boxing gold medalist
Vanes Martirosyan who was born in Armenia, to a complete
seven-people table tennis team with only two people who
were born in the United States.
Sports
and Education
The
relationship between sports and the education system in
the U.S. is unique, especially with regard to college and
university sports. Today, almost all American colleges and
universities have a domestic athletic team, and support
competition between different colleges by offering scholarships
to students who will compete on their athletic teams.
In the
United States, athletic competition between different colleges
and universities usually takes place within the structure
of a certain athletic association. These institutions sponsor
the different teams which compete against other members
of the athletic association they belong to.
The
largest college related athletic association in the United
States is the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA)
which has over than 1,200 institutions, conferences and
organizations as members.

| Many
colleges offer sports scholarships at the intercollegiate level
to students who are academically able and talented in a specific
sport. Being a member of a college team on scholarship is a way
many students use to pay for their education.
Athletic scholarships
are given for many different sports, while the amounts vary from
a few thousand dollars to as much as $30,000 a year.
There are
several options for receiving a scholarship based on athletic
achievement. The simplest one is finding a coach that will sponsor
your request for a scholarship, which involves applying directly
to a U.S. university and approaching a coach for your sport. In
order to do this you must have an identifiable achievement in
your sport and do some researches as to which institution offers
scholarships in that particular field.
Being
a Student Athlete
The
time pressure Student Athletes have to endure during their years
at college or university is much greater than that of the typical
student. However, they have many more resources for relief.
School resources such as special tutoring, career counseling,
athletes’ study hall and computer lab are common in many
universities. Some schools even allow student athletes to enroll
early in order to fit the classes comfortably into their schedule.
Although it
seems that juggling both an academic and an athlete’s career
is difficult and complex, American colleges and universities understand
the importance of both and try to make the task easier to endure.
