General Information

Each year, the Diversity Lottery (DV) Program makes 50,000 immigrant visas available through a lottery to people who come from countries with low rates of immigration to the United States. Of these visas, 5,000 are allocated for use under NACARA beginning with DV '99. The State Department holds the lottery every year, randomly selecting 110,000 applicants from all qualified entries. This high number of applications is necessary because many will not complete the visa process. However, once 50,000 visas are issued or the fiscal year ends, the DV program is closed.

Green Card Benefits

The annual DV lottery program is an excellent opportunity for potential immigrants to obtain the status of a permanent legal resident of the USA. A permanent residence visa is normally referred to as a Green Card. This visa class entitles its holder to live, work and study in the United States of America on a permanent basis, as well as enter and leave the country freely. Should you win, you will be able to work in any government, public or private job available. You will also be allowed to bring your spouse and any unmarried children under the age of 21 with you to the United States. A permanent residence visa is generally good for life; Green Card holders receive health, education, retirement, taxation, social security and many other benefits. The Green Card DOES NOT affect your present citizenship. A Green Card holder may later apply for United States Citizenship, if he so wishes.

Established in the 1990 Immigration Act, The Diversity Immigrant Visa Lottery is intended to provide immigration opportunities to natives of countries other than the main source of immigration to the U.S.A. The program aims to diversify the American population by creating an immigration opportunity to under-represented ethnic groups.
